Electric Bike Insurance
You may be wondering if you need to buy electric bike insurance as a legal requirement. The simple answer is that you are under no obligation to buy electric bike insurance in the U.S.
As long as your electric bike falls into the three classifications, you don't need to insure it. The three classes identify your bike as an electric bike and not a moped or electric motorbike. The three classes are as follows:
Class 1 - Also known as "pedelec." Class 1 electric bikes allow you to travel up to 20mph with electrical assistance.
Class 2 - These electric bikes are also limited to an assisted speed of 20mph. But, they also have a throttle, which allows you to ride without pedaling at all.
Class 3 - Class 3 electric bikes work the same way as class 1 bikes, but their limited top speed is 28mph.
Even though you are not legally required to insure your electric bike, there are some circumstances you might want to protect yourself from with insurance.
Protect Your Investment
Electric bikes are getting more affordable, but they are still a significant investment. A good insurance policy will protect your investment from theft and damage. An insurance company will be able to replace or repair your electric bike depending on the policy and circumstances.
Protect Yourself
Electric bikes are a relatively safe way of traveling, and they are rarely involved in severe accidents. However, they come with their own set of risks. Their additional weight, power, and speed increase their potential to damage other people's property or injure pedestrians more than regular bikes. There is also the potential for a defect with the electric bike to cause issues.
With this in mind, electric bikes have increased risks that could be managed with liability coverage. Without appropriate insurance, you as the rider could face costly financial accountability.
The PLI is Included in Dirwin's Standard Package for Free
At Dirwin, we want to give you peace of mind and confidence in our electric bikes. Therefore, all our electric bikes come with product liability insurance as standard. We have put this in place to demonstrate the high quality of our products. This also protects you from any issue caused by unlikely defects with the products.
Electric bike insurance typically covers you for property damage resulting from theft, crash, collision, fire, attempted theft, vandalism, or colliding with a pedestrian.
Most insurance companies allow you to customize your coverage to suit your style of riding. For example, riding an electric bike for commuting requires different cover for using it for recreation.
Hopefully, you will never need to use your insurance policy, but it is good to know that you have it as a backup.
